Sawgrass Recreation Park from Miami: Airboat Tour, Tickets and Transport
Plan a trip to Sawgrass Recreation Park from Miami. Compare 2026 ticket prices, the 40-minute airboat ride, the Big Bus coach from Miami Beach and Bayside, the animal exhibits and Gator Nights.
Sawgrass Recreation Park is one of South Florida’s best-known airboat attractions, and a different choice from the Tamiami Trail airboat parks west of Miami. It is in Weston, on US Highway 27 in western Broward County, so it is most convenient if you are staying in Fort Lauderdale, western Broward or northern Miami-Dade. Miami Beach and Miami International Airport are each 45 to 60 minutes away by car.
From South Beach or Downtown Miami without a car, the Big Bus coach runs to Sawgrass from Miami Beach and Bayside Marketplace, with the airboat and park admission included. The standard daytime visit gives you a 40-minute airboat ride plus the animal exhibits.
If you want an easy airboat ride with transport from Miami, Sawgrass is a strong option. If you specifically want to ride an airboat inside Everglades National Park, look at the Tamiami Trail instead: the National Park Service lists Coopertown, Gator Park and Everglades Safari Park as the three authorized airboat businesses in the park, and Sawgrass is not one of them.
The calendar below is for the Big Bus airboat, wildlife exhibit and round-trip bus tour, from $50 and rated 4.1/5 from more than 11,000 reviews. It goes to Sawgrass, includes park admission, and departs from set stops in Miami Beach and Downtown Miami; your stop is fixed by the option you choose.

What is Sawgrass Recreation Park?
Sawgrass Recreation Park is a commercial airboat and wildlife attraction on the northern edge of the greater Everglades. A visit combines:
- a guided airboat ride,
- wildlife spotting,
- Everglades commentary from the captain,
- and animal exhibit areas.
The captains look out for alligators, wading birds, fish and turtles. On general admission the airboat part lasts 40 minutes, which sits in the middle: longer than the 20 to 25-minute ride at the Everglades Alligator Farm, and still easy to fit into a half day.
Is Sawgrass Recreation Park inside Everglades National Park?
No. If visiting Everglades National Park itself matters to you, this is the point to settle first.
The National Park Service lists three airboat businesses that operate inside Everglades National Park:
- Coopertown
- Gator Park
- Everglades Safari Park
Sawgrass is not one of them. It is real Everglades wetland, in Broward County, but outside the park boundary, and many tour titles that use the word “Everglades” do not say so.
That does not make Sawgrass a worse ride. It suits a different trip: choose Sawgrass for convenience, especially from Fort Lauderdale or northern Miami, and choose a Tamiami Trail concession if being inside the national park is the priority. Our guide to Everglades National Park airboat tours covers those three.
How long is the airboat ride?
The general-admission airboat tour lasts 40 minutes, according to the park. Resellers list different lengths for their own packages: the Big Bus listing on GetYourGuide gives about 45 minutes, and some ticket listings say 30. Check the length on the product you book.
Forty minutes is enough for:
- fast open-water stretches,
- slower wildlife-spotting sections,
- Everglades scenery,
- and the captain’s commentary.
For most first-time riders, that is a good length. You get noticeably more than a short attraction-style ride without committing to a long private trip.
How often do the airboats depart?
The park runs daytime airboats every 20 to 30 minutes until 3:30 PM, with a final airboat at 5:00 PM. The animal exhibits also close at 5:00 PM.
Arrive by about 4:00 PM at the latest if you want time for the exhibits as well as the boat. If you want the complete visit, earlier is much better.
Do you need a reservation?
Yes. The park requires reservations for all tours, because popular time windows can sell out.
Your reservation is for an arrival window, not a set boat departure. Once you check in within that window, you go out on the next available boat. Boats normally leave every 30 minutes, so the wait is short.
Book well ahead for:
- weekends,
- winter high season,
- school holidays,
- and busy travel periods.
How much are tickets?
On October 21, 2026, the park’s home page listed general admission from $30.95 per adult (13 and over) and $20.95 per child aged 4 to 12, with children under 4 free. Its FAQ page still showed the older $28.95 and $18.95, plus tax. The two official pages do not match, so go by the price on the booking screen for your date.
You can also book a Sawgrass ticket through a marketplace. The Sawgrass daytime airboat and exhibit ticket is listed on GetYourGuide as a self-drive ticket; compare it with the park’s own price before you book. If you need transport from Miami, the Big Bus package is from $50 per person with admission included.
What does general admission include?
General admission includes:
- the 40-minute airboat ride,
- access to the animal exhibits.
The exhibits hold rescued and adopted animals, reptiles and mammals among them; the Big Bus listing counts around fifty. The exact animals change. For families, this means the visit does not rest entirely on what wildlife turns up during the ride.
Will you see alligators?
Possibly, but wild sightings are never guaranteed. The captain searches the surrounding habitat, and what you see depends on:
- weather,
- water level,
- temperature,
- season,
- and luck.
You may also see:
- birds,
- turtles,
- fish,
- and other wetland wildlife.
If wild alligators are your top priority, compare Sawgrass with Shark Valley, where you spend much longer moving slowly through good habitat. Our guide to where to see alligators in the Everglades covers the best spots. If the airboat ride itself is the priority, Sawgrass is an easy choice.
Are the animal exhibits included?
Yes. The exhibits come with general-admission airboat tickets, which gives you something to do before or after the ride and makes the visit more family-friendly.
The exhibits close at 5:00 PM. If you arrive only for the final boat, you may not have time to see everything.
How long should you spend at Sawgrass Recreation Park?
Allow about two hours for a self-drive visit. That covers:
- check-in,
- waiting for the next boat,
- the 40-minute airboat ride,
- the animal exhibits,
- photos,
- and an unhurried departure.
On a coach from Miami the day is much longer, because the road journey and the transfer schedule are added. The Big Bus day trip takes four to five hours in total, depending on traffic and the listing you read.
Can you visit Sawgrass Recreation Park from Miami without a car?
Yes. Big Bus Tours runs round-trip coaches from Miami to Sawgrass, and the Big Bus Everglades package includes the airboat and park admission, so you do not buy a separate park ticket.
Pickup points are:
- Miami Beach
- Bayside Marketplace in Downtown Miami
with several departures on most days. This is one of the biggest advantages of Sawgrass for Miami visitors without a rental car. Our guide to getting to the Everglades from Miami without a car compares it with the van tours that pick up at hotels.
Where does the Miami Beach transfer leave from?
The Miami Beach stop is:
Soundscape Park
1680 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach
It is close to the South Beach hotel area. Departure times vary by day and by guide language, so check the schedule on the option you book. Our Miami Beach Everglades guide covers getting to the stop.
Where does the Downtown Miami transfer leave from?
The Downtown Miami stop is:
Bayside Marketplace
401 Biscayne Boulevard
This is convenient if you are staying around:
- Downtown Miami,
- Bayfront Park,
- Bayside,
- and the PortMiami area.
If you are staying in Brickell, the Downtown stop is usually easier than travelling to Miami Beach.
How long is the transfer tour from Miami?
Plan on four to five hours from pickup to drop-off. That includes:
- the coach ride each way,
- the airboat ride,
- and time at Sawgrass Recreation Park.
Miami traffic can stretch it. Do not schedule a flight, cruise check-in or a fixed dinner straight after the expected return.
Is the transfer ticket better than driving yourself?
It depends on whether you already have a car.
Choose the transfer if:
- you are staying in South Beach,
- you do not have a rental car,
- you want one simple booking,
- you do not want to navigate,
- or you are travelling solo.
Drive yourself if:
- you already have a rental car,
- you are travelling as a family, and paying for several coach seats adds up,
- you want to pick your own arrival window,
- or you want to go somewhere else afterwards.
Driving also spares you the wait for the shared coach schedule.
Is Sawgrass Recreation Park better from Miami or Fort Lauderdale?
Sawgrass is especially convenient from Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. It is in Weston, much farther north than the Tamiami Trail airboat operators that many Miami tours use.
If you are staying in:
- Fort Lauderdale,
- Sunrise,
- Weston,
- Pembroke Pines,
- or elsewhere in Broward,
Sawgrass is one of the easiest major airboat rides to reach.
From South Beach it still works, especially on the coach, but you travel farther north than you would for the Tamiami Trail options.
Sawgrass Recreation Park vs Everglades Safari Park
These two names are easy to mix up.
Sawgrass Recreation Park
- Weston, Broward County
- 40-minute general-admission airboat
- Convenient from Fort Lauderdale
- Coach from Miami available
- Animal exhibits included
- Not one of the three NPS-listed airboat operators inside Everglades National Park
Everglades Safari Park
- Tamiami Trail west of Miami
- One of the three authorized Everglades National Park airboat operators
- Convenient for Shark Valley
- Better choice if national-park status matters
The Everglades Safari Park airboat tour is a self-drive ticket on GetYourGuide, and our Everglades Safari Park guide covers it in full.
Which should you choose?
Choose Sawgrass if transport from Miami or being near Fort Lauderdale matters most. Choose Safari Park if you want an authorized airboat ride inside Everglades National Park or plan to continue to Shark Valley.
Sawgrass Recreation Park vs Gator Park
Both offer:
- airboat rides,
- alligator-focused wildlife viewing,
- and an easy first introduction to the Everglades.
The big difference is location.
Sawgrass Recreation Park
Better from Fort Lauderdale and the northern side of South Florida.
Gator Park
Better from Miami if you are heading west along the Tamiami Trail or want one of the NPS-authorized operators. Its airboat tour and wildlife show is from $32 and rated 4.5/5 from more than 8,000 reviews.
For many travellers, the best choice is the one that saves the most driving. Our Everglades Safari Park vs Gator Park comparison covers the two Tamiami Trail parks side by side.
Sawgrass Recreation Park vs Coopertown
Coopertown is a small, traditional Tamiami Trail airboat stop, running since 1945. Its airboat tour and interpretive area is from $39 and rated 4.3/5 from 842 reviews. Sawgrass is a larger attraction with more boats, more visitors and more add-ons, including the night rides.
Choose between them on:
- location,
- ride length,
- group size,
- transport,
- and whether being inside the national park matters.
Is Sawgrass good for families?
Yes. The standard visit works well for children because it combines:
- a 40-minute airboat ride,
- wildlife spotting,
- and animal exhibits.
Children 3 and under ride free on general admission. All children aged six and under must wear a life jacket, which the park provides, and the park does not recommend the tour for babies under one.
Airboats are loud. The park hands out ear plugs to every rider, and earmuffs are sold in the gift shop if your child will not keep plugs in.
Is Sawgrass accessible?
The airboats are not wheelchair accessible: you need to be able to transfer out of a wheelchair to board. The exhibits are accessible on a gravel walkway, and the park lends a wheelchair for the exhibit area at no cost.
If you need extra time to board, tell staff at check-in and they move you to the front of the line. If you have specific mobility needs, call the park on 954-389-0202 before you book.
What is Gator Nights?
Gator Nights is the park’s night airboat ride. It runs on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, about 8:30 to 9:30 PM, and starts from $45 when booked with the park.
A night ride is a very different trip from a daytime airboat. You cross the wetland in darkness while the captain uses lights to pick out alligator eyes and you listen for frogs, insects and other night animals.
On Viator, the same ride is sold as the Everglades night airboat tour on Viator, from $48 and rated 4.8/5 from 107 reviews. It needs at least ten passengers on the night; if the minimum is not met or the weather stops the tour, you are told on the day.
Best for
- repeat visitors,
- adults and older children,
- travellers who want something unusual,
- people staying in Fort Lauderdale or Miami for several days.
Is there Miami transportation for Gator Nights?
Yes. Big Bus runs a night coach on the same two evenings, Wednesday and Saturday, with pickups at about 6:30 PM at Soundscape Park in Miami Beach and 7:00 PM at Bayside Marketplace. It is sold directly by Big Bus, not on GetYourGuide or Viator.
Check the return time before you book. A late-night return is a bigger problem than on a daytime tour if it runs past your plans.
Private airboat tours at Sawgrass
Sawgrass also sells private boats, which cost more but suit:
- families,
- groups,
- photographers,
- special occasions,
- and travellers who want the captain to themselves.
For a private daytime boat, the private one-hour Sawgrass airboat is rated 4.7/5 from 91 reviews on GetYourGuide. For a private night ride, the park’s Red Eye exclusive night airboat starts from $325 when booked with the park, and Viator sells it as the private night airboat ride on Viator, rated 4.7/5 from 36 reviews.
If wildlife photography is the main goal, a private boat is a better use of money than a generic premium package. Our private Everglades tours guide compares private options across the region.
Is there food?
Yes. The park has a food-truck area with snacks, drinks and lunch items. For a short self-drive visit, that is convenient. On the Miami coach, do not count on time for a leisurely meal.
Is there parking?
Yes. Sawgrass is well set up for self-drive visitors.
One detail from the park: some GPS systems recognize the street address but send you the wrong way when you are almost there. The park sits 2 miles north of I-75 at Exit 23. Search for “Sawgrass Recreation Park” in your maps app and check the route against that before you set off.
Morning or afternoon?
Go in the morning if you can. You get:
- cooler conditions,
- more time for the animal exhibits,
- room to adjust if the weather changes,
- and no risk of arriving close to the final departure.
An afternoon trip still works, especially on the coach from Miami.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Airboats run subject to the weather, and South Florida thunderstorms can change schedules, especially from June to October. If a named tropical storm or hurricane approaches, the park may contact you to reschedule or refund, with no cancellation or change fee.
If storms are around on the day, call the park on 954-389-0202 before you set off. If your dates are tight, book an option with flexible cancellation.
What should you bring?
Bring:
- sunscreen,
- sunglasses,
- water,
- lightweight clothing,
- insect repellent,
- comfortable shoes,
- and a rain layer in the wetter months.
Hold on to loose hats before the airboat speeds up: anything that comes off on open water is gone. Airboats are loud, so use the ear plugs the park provides.
Is Sawgrass Recreation Park worth it from Miami?
Yes, especially if:
- you do not have a car,
- the coach times suit you,
- you want a 40-minute airboat ride,
- or you are staying in northern Miami-Dade.
It is less appealing if your main goal is Everglades National Park itself. In that case, choose one of:
- Coopertown,
- Gator Park,
- or Everglades Safari Park
and consider adding Shark Valley the same day.
Who should choose Sawgrass Recreation Park?
Best for
- Fort Lauderdale visitors
- Families
- Miami visitors who want transport included
- First-time airboat riders
- Travellers interested in animal exhibits
- Visitors who want a night ride
Less ideal for
- Travellers set on Everglades National Park
- Visitors planning Shark Valley the same day
- Serious wildlife photographers on the shared ride
- Travellers already staying near the Tamiami Trail
What I would choose
Staying in Fort Lauderdale
Sawgrass Recreation Park. It is the closest major airboat park to you.
Staying in South Beach without a car
Compare the Big Bus Sawgrass package with a Tamiami Trail transport tour and choose the better pickup and time. Our hotel pickup guide lists the tours that collect you from your hotel.
Staying in Miami with a rental car
I would usually choose a Tamiami Trail airboat plus Shark Valley day, unless Sawgrass appeals to you for its own sake.
Family with children
Sawgrass is a strong choice, because the exhibits add to the boat ride.
Repeat visitor
Try Gator Nights or a private airboat instead of repeating the daytime ride.
