Everglades Airboat Tours Near Miami: Safari Park vs Gator Park vs Coopertown vs Sawgrass

Compare Everglades Safari Park, Gator Park, Coopertown and Sawgrass Recreation Park side by side, with 2026 prices and park fees, ride length, drive times from Miami, private rides and who each one suits.

Updated November 2, 2026

Four names come up again and again when you look for an Everglades airboat ride near Miami: Everglades Safari Park, Gator Park, Coopertown and Sawgrass Recreation Park. All four sell the classic South Florida ride across the sawgrass, but they suit different trips. Safari Park, Gator Park and Coopertown sit on the Tamiami Trail (US 41) and are the only three airboat businesses the National Park Service authorizes inside Everglades National Park. Sawgrass is in Weston, outside the park, and is easier to reach from Fort Lauderdale.

For a Miami stay, pick one of the three Tamiami Trail parks by the kind of visit you want: Safari Park for the most attraction-style extras, Gator Park for an alligator-themed family visit at the lowest Tamiami Trail price, and Coopertown for a traditional airboat-first stop. Choose Sawgrass when a base near Fort Lauderdale or an easy coach transfer matters more to you than being inside the national park.

The calendar below is for the Miami: Everglades National Park Airboat Tour & Wildlife Show, the Gator Park ticket on GetYourGuide, from $32 and rated 4.5/5 from more than 8,000 reviews. It is a self-drive ticket, and the $8 park fee is paid at the counter.

Our guide to private Everglades tours from Miami compares these with the private tours that include Miami pickup.

The most important difference: national park vs wider Everglades

Decide this first. The National Park Service lists only three authorized commercial airboat businesses inside Everglades National Park:

  1. Coopertown
  2. Gator Park
  3. Everglades Safari Park

All three sit along the Tamiami Trail between Miami and Shark Valley. Sawgrass Recreation Park is a separate airboat attraction in Weston. Sawgrass is not a worse ride, just one outside the park.

If your goal is “I want to take an airboat ride inside Everglades National Park”, choose one of the three Tamiami Trail parks. If your goal is “I want a good Everglades airboat ride near Miami”, compare all four. Our guide to airboat tours inside Everglades National Park explains why airboats are limited to this one stretch.

1. Everglades Safari Park: the fullest attraction-style visit

Everglades Safari Park has the broadest standard package of the three Tamiami Trail concessions. General admission includes:

  • a 30–40 minute airboat ride
  • a wildlife and alligator show
  • the Jungle Trail
  • an observation platform
  • park exhibits

The park’s own booking page sells the adult ticket for $49 and the child ticket (ages 3 to 9) for $25, with taxes and the $8 national park fee included. On the GetYourGuide version of the ticket you pay the $8 at the booth instead. This is the park to choose if you want one easy Everglades stop with plenty to do even when the wildlife on the water is quiet.

What Safari Park does well

More than just the boat

The Jungle Trail, observation platform and exhibits give you something to do before or after the ride. That makes Safari Park a good choice for:

  • families
  • first-time visitors
  • people who want a predictable two- to three-hour visit
  • travelers who do not want the airboat to be the whole experience

Easy first Everglades experience

You arrive, ride the airboat, watch the wildlife show, walk the trail and leave. You do not need a complicated itinerary.

Private upgrades

Safari Park also sells private 40- and 60-minute airboat rides (prices in the private-ride table above). They suit photographers, families, groups and anyone who wants a longer time on the water.

Potential drawbacks

Safari Park has the highest ticket price of the four, although its $49 already includes the park fee. It also feels more like a developed attraction than a stripped-back airboat stop, which some visitors want and others do not.

Best for

  • First-time visitors
  • Families
  • Travelers who want extra exhibits
  • Visitors who want an authorized national-park airboat
  • A Safari Park plus Shark Valley day

More detail on tickets, the show and the drive is in our Everglades Safari Park guide.

2. Gator Park: an alligator-focused family visit for less

Gator Park is the most openly alligator-themed of the three Tamiami Trail concessions. Its standard visit includes:

  • a shared airboat ride of about 35 to 40 minutes
  • a wildlife show of around 30 minutes
  • adult admission at $35 (12 and over) and child admission at $25, with children aged 1 to 4 free, on the park’s own site
  • the $8 National Park Service fee, paid separately at the counter

The park says reservations are not needed for a standard visit, and boats leave through the day, so you can arrive and join the next departure.

What Gator Park does well

Strong alligator focus

If your children keep asking where the alligators are, Gator Park is the easy answer. The standard ticket combines a ride through wild habitat with a separate wildlife show.

Frequent departures

Boats leave frequently through the day, so you do not have to hit one exact departure time.

Lower base price

At $35 plus the $8 park fee, an adult pays $43, which is less than Coopertown ($39 plus $8) and Safari Park ($49). Compare the final total, because the park fee sits outside the ticket price.

Potential drawbacks

The standard ride can be slightly shorter than Coopertown’s 40 minutes. If the boat matters more to you than the wildlife show, Coopertown may suit you better.

Best for

  • Families
  • Alligator-focused visitors
  • Budget-conscious travelers
  • First-time airboat riders
  • Visitors combining the park with Shark Valley

Our Gator Park guide covers hours, the show and getting there without a car.

3. Coopertown Airboats: a traditional airboat-first stop

Coopertown is the one to choose if you want something less like a wildlife attraction and more like a classic Tamiami Trail airboat stop. The regular visit includes:

  • about 40 minutes on the airboat
  • a roughly 20-minute educational alligator presentation

The adult ticket (12 and over) costs $39 and the child ticket for ages 7 to 11 costs $21.40, with sales tax included; children 6 and under ride free. The $8 national park fee for visitors aged 16 and over is charged on top. Reservations are not required for the standard ride.

What Coopertown does well

Strong standard ride length

Forty minutes is a good length for a shared airboat: enough time for speed, scenery, looking for wildlife and the captain’s commentary.

Airboat is the focus

Coopertown has fewer attraction-style extras than Safari Park. If you mainly came to ride an airboat, you are not paying for exhibits you may not care about.

Longer private options

Coopertown offers private rides of:

  • 1 hour
  • 90 minutes
  • 2 hours

That makes it a good fit for serious wildlife watchers and photographers. Prices are quoted when you reserve.

Potential drawbacks

Families who want plenty of animal-attraction extras may prefer Gator Park or Safari Park.

Best for

  • Couples
  • Self-drive visitors
  • Travelers who mainly care about the airboat
  • Photographers considering a private ride
  • Visitors who want a traditional Tamiami Trail feel

Our Coopertown guide has the opening hours and the last-boat time.

4. Sawgrass Recreation Park: the pick from Fort Lauderdale

Sawgrass Recreation Park is in Weston, west of Fort Lauderdale, well away from the other three. Its general-admission ride lasts 40 minutes and includes the animal exhibits. Children aged 3 and under go free.

The park’s own pages disagree on price. Its home page lists $30.95 per adult (13 and over) and $20.95 per child aged 4 to 12, while its FAQ still shows $28.95 and $18.95 plus tax, so expect to pay about $29 to $31 plus tax and check the booking screen. Unlike the three Tamiami Trail parks, Sawgrass asks you to reserve ahead.

What Sawgrass does well

Excellent from Fort Lauderdale

Sawgrass may be the more convenient choice if you are staying in:

  • Fort Lauderdale
  • Weston
  • Sunrise
  • Pembroke Pines
  • northern Miami-Dade

If being inside the national park does not matter to you, there is little point driving south and west to the Tamiami Trail.

Miami transportation

From Miami, the Sawgrass airboat, wildlife exhibit and round-trip bus costs from $50 and is rated 4.1/5 from more than 11,000 reviews. That can be simpler than arranging your own transport to a Tamiami Trail park.

Good family package

The 40-minute ride plus the animal exhibits make a good family visit.

Potential drawbacks

Sawgrass is not one of the three NPS-authorized airboat businesses inside Everglades National Park. If national-park status matters to you, choose Safari Park, Gator Park or Coopertown.

Best for

  • Fort Lauderdale visitors
  • Northern Miami-Dade travelers
  • Families
  • Travelers who want an easy transfer package
  • Visitors who care more about the ride than about park boundaries

Our Sawgrass guide covers the coach from Miami Beach and the night rides.

Which is closest to Miami?

The National Park Service gives these addresses for the three national-park airboat operators, all on the Tamiami Trail:

  1. Coopertown, 22700 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33194
  2. Gator Park, 24050 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33194
  3. Everglades Safari Park, 26700 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33194

Coopertown is the easternmost, and Safari Park is the farthest west, toward Shark Valley. All three are about 35 to 40 minutes’ drive from downtown Miami in normal traffic, and 10 to 15 minutes east of Shark Valley. Miami traffic makes more difference than the few miles between them, so do not choose one only because it is a few minutes closer.

Sawgrass is in a completely different direction

Sawgrass Recreation Park is at 1006 North US Highway 27, Weston, FL 33327, north of the Miami-to-Shark-Valley route. That is why it suits Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. From Miami Beach or Miami International Airport, allow 45 to 60 minutes.

Which has the longest standard airboat ride?

On the parks’ current published information:

Coopertown

About 40 minutes.

Sawgrass Recreation Park

About 40 minutes.

Everglades Safari Park

About 30 to 40 minutes.

Gator Park

About 35 to 40 minutes.

The differences are small. Group size and what happens during the ride matter more than an extra five minutes.

Which is cheapest?

Adult prices at current published rates, with the national park fees added:

Gator Park

$35, plus the $8 park fee: $43.

Sawgrass

About $29 to $31 plus tax, with no national park fee.

Coopertown

$39, plus the $8 park fee: $47.

Safari Park

$49 on its own booking page, with the $8 park fee and taxes already included.

The packages include different extras, so this is not a perfect like-for-like comparison. At the three Tamiami Trail parks, non-US residents aged 16 and over also pay the $100 nonresident fee, which Sawgrass does not charge. The $35 vehicle and $20 per-person entrance fees apply at the park’s own entrances, such as Shark Valley, if you continue there afterwards. Our guide to Everglades airboat tour prices shows full family totals.

Which is best for children?

Narrow it to Gator Park, Safari Park or Sawgrass.

Gator Park

  • a strong alligator theme
  • a wildlife show
  • a manageable ride length
  • the lowest Tamiami Trail price

Safari Park

  • airboat
  • show
  • trail
  • observation platform
  • exhibits

There is more to do beyond the boat.

Sawgrass

  • a 40-minute ride
  • animal exhibits
  • easy access from Fort Lauderdale
  • transfer options from Miami

Coopertown

Still family-friendly, but the emphasis is on the airboat itself.

Which is best for alligators?

No operator can guarantee a wild alligator sighting, and all four ride through suitable wetland habitat. For the most alligator-themed visit, choose Gator Park.

For slow wild-alligator watching, add Shark Valley to your day. On the tram or a bike you spend far longer looking for wildlife than on a 35- to 40-minute airboat. Our guide to where to see alligators in the Everglades lists the best spots.

Which is best for wildlife photography?

For serious photography, these matter more than the operator name:

  • private vs shared
  • group size
  • ride duration
  • how flexible the captain can be

Among these four, Coopertown’s longer private rides and Safari Park’s 60-minute private ride are the strongest options. A private airboat lets you choose your angle, which you cannot do from the middle of a full shared boat.

Which is best if you have no car?

This changes the recommendation.

Sawgrass

Organized transfers from Miami are easy to find, such as the round-trip bus tour to Sawgrass.

Safari Park / Gator Park / Coopertown

You can reach them with Miami tour companies too, but the tour title does not always name the park. If you want one park in particular, confirm it in the itinerary. The Everglades Small Group on Airboat with Transportation (from $69, 4.8/5 from 354 reviews) is one transport-inclusive option.

Without a car, choose in this order:

  1. Pickup location
  2. Total tour duration
  3. Actual airboat time
  4. Operator
  5. Final price

Picking the park first and solving transport afterwards usually goes wrong. Our guide to getting to the Everglades from Miami without a car compares the transport options.

Which is best with a rental car?

With a rental car, one of the three Tamiami Trail parks is usually the better choice, because you can continue straight to Shark Valley:

Miami → Coopertown, Gator Park or Safari Park → Shark Valley → Miami

That gives you:

  • airboat speed
  • sawgrass
  • a search for alligators
  • slow wildlife watching
  • much more time in the Everglades landscape

Sawgrass makes more sense if you are based farther north.

Which is best for a half-day?

All four can work. From Miami, Safari Park, Gator Park or Coopertown are the straightforward drive. From Fort Lauderdale, Sawgrass is closer.

Keep a half-day airboat trip simple. Do not choose a distant operator because one review says it is slightly better, since the extra driving can cancel out the gain.

Which is best for a full day?

A good full day does not stay at one airboat park.

From Miami

Choose one of:

  • Coopertown
  • Gator Park
  • Safari Park

then continue to Shark Valley. Our Everglades day trip guide has a timed itinerary.

From Fort Lauderdale

Take the Sawgrass airboat, then add another South Florida nature stop on your route.

Safari Park vs Gator Park

This is the most common head-to-head. Our Safari Park vs Gator Park guide goes further.

Choose Safari Park if:

  • you want more attraction elements included
  • the trail and observation platform appeal to you
  • you do not mind paying more

Choose Gator Park if:

  • alligators are the theme
  • you want the lower admission price
  • you are traveling with children

For most visitors, the airboat ride itself is very similar.

Safari Park vs Coopertown

Choose Safari Park if:

  • you want an attraction-style visit
  • you want more to do after the boat
  • you are visiting with children

Choose Coopertown if:

  • you mainly want the airboat
  • you like a more traditional feel
  • a 40-minute ride appeals to you
  • you may upgrade to a longer private ride

Gator Park vs Coopertown

Choose Gator Park if:

  • the wildlife show matters
  • children are a priority
  • price matters

Choose Coopertown if:

  • boat time matters more
  • you want fewer attraction extras
  • you are considering a longer private tour

Sawgrass vs the Tamiami Trail parks

This is mainly a location decision.

Choose Sawgrass if:

  • you are staying in Fort Lauderdale
  • you are in northern Broward
  • the Miami transfer fits your schedule
  • you do not mind that the boat is outside Everglades National Park

Choose Tamiami Trail if:

  • you are staying in Miami
  • you want an authorized national-park airboat
  • you want to combine the ride with Shark Valley

Do you need reservations?

The four parks handle this differently.

Everglades Safari Park

You can buy standard tickets in advance, and general tours run frequently through the day.

Gator Park

The park says reservations are not required for standard admission.

Coopertown

Reservations are not required for the regular ride.

Sawgrass Recreation Park

Reservations are required. Keep that in mind if you like spontaneous road trips.

Morning or afternoon?

Go in the morning at any of the four. You get:

  • cooler temperatures
  • gentler sun
  • room to change plans if the weather turns
  • time to add another Everglades stop

In the wet season, from about mid-May to November, a morning ride also lowers the chance that an afternoon thunderstorm interrupts your plans.

Can you see alligators on all four tours?

Yes, potentially. All four run through wetland habitat where alligators live, but wild sightings are never guaranteed. They depend on:

  • water level
  • temperature
  • season
  • weather
  • luck

Be skeptical of any booking page that seems to promise far more wild alligators than the others.

What should you bring?

For any of these airboat rides, bring:

  • sunscreen
  • sunglasses
  • water
  • lightweight clothing
  • insect repellent
  • comfortable shoes
  • rain protection in the wetter months

Secure loose hats. Airboats are loud, so wear hearing protection; operators usually hand it out.

My choice by traveler type

First-time couple staying in Miami

Coopertown or Safari Park: Coopertown if the airboat is the priority, Safari Park if you want a fuller attraction.

Family with younger children

Gator Park or Safari Park. Both add enough beyond the ride to keep children interested.

Staying in Fort Lauderdale

Sawgrass Recreation Park, because it is the closest of the four.

Wildlife photographer

A private ride at Coopertown or Safari Park. Private matters more than the park.

Budget traveler

Compare Gator Park and Sawgrass, and check all fees and transport costs.

Rental car and a full day

One of the three Tamiami Trail parks, then Shark Valley.

No rental car

Choose the best transport-inclusive Miami tour first, then check which park it uses.
