The gap between “pickup” and “meeting point”

If you are staying in South Beach without a car, almost every Everglades tour will claim to solve your transport problem. They solve it in two quite different ways, and the listing language blurs them.

A meeting point tour asks you to walk somewhere. The advantage is coverage: this page’s featured tour uses sixteen central points spread along Collins Avenue and through downtown, which in practice puts one within a few minutes of nearly every central hotel. A hotel pickup tour comes to your door, which is better if you are staying further north on Collins or travelling with someone who would rather not walk in August.

Neither is better in the abstract. What matters is checking which one you bought, since a missed meeting point is a missed tour and there is no second departure to catch.

The fee line is where the money actually is

Miami Beach tours cluster between $50 and $128, and the headline prices are misleading because they cover different things.

The single biggest variable is national-park entry. The National Park Service applies an additional surcharge to non-US residents on top of standard admission at its own entrances, so for an international visitor the difference between a tour that bundles every fee and one that does not can exceed the gap in ticket price.

This page’s featured tour states it plainly: all Everglades park fees included, for non-US as well as US citizens. A handful of others on this site do the same, including the full-day expedition, which explicitly covers the non-resident increases. Walk-up airboat tickets never do.

What an hour each way buys you

Miami Beach sits about an hour from the wetlands, which means a half-day tour is really two hours of driving wrapped around 45 minutes on the water.

That sounds like poor arithmetic until you look at the alternative. There is no public transport to any Everglades access point, and a round-trip rideshare typically costs more than a guided tour that includes the airboat. The better operators use the drive as guided time. On this page’s tour a licensed park ranger rides the airboat itself and narrates the run — which is not the case on every Miami airboat ticket.

Choosing between the Miami Beach options

If you want door-to-door collection and a smaller vehicle, the small-group tours collect from Collins Avenue hotels in a fourteen-seat Sprinter van and run 50 to 60 minutes on the water.
